What is Emmet?
This was a school project. The idea behind it was to create a time travel app. Imagine you finally have a chance to time travel. "Emmet" is a new app that will help you to do so. The app doesn't allow you to travel in space (which means you will always be in the same place geographically), but this can be done in the future.
INTRODUCTION
PROBLEM
From existing research it seems that customers have a very little knowledge of historical events thus they end up in moments in time that aren’t interesting for them.
OBJECTIVE
Improve the design and the features of the time travel machine main console.
ROLE
Product Designer
01
Analysis
Research and Brainstorming
STEP 1
My first step was to write down all my current information about the existing app and problem. I didn’t do any competitor research since it is the only console on the market.
STEP 2
Then I documented all of the ideas and thought I had and separated them into sections.
STEP 3
The last step was to develop the relevant questions to cover all of the concerns I had.
Note: I used Mural to create the board.

Survey type 1. Google
Due to the limited time, I decided to proceed with the Survey type of research.
To get the best data, I ended up having two different types of surveys.
First is the usual Google form: Google Survey
Types of questions:
Personal
I wanted to collect information about the occupation and Age (The age I split up through generations.
I think it can be interesting to research what type of events different generations want to see).App navigation
What users would love to see in the appHistory knowledge
How confident do the users feel about their history knowledge?Security
How to make users feel safe while they are traveling?
Survey type 2. Instagram
I wanted to expand the survey type and used my personal Instagram account for open types of questions. I feel like it is way easier (and fun) for some Generations of users to answer the survey in this format.
The result was fantastic. I received exciting answers for some of the questions.
Data Analysis
Now it’s time to collect all the answers and analyze the data.
START: 67 people
AGE:
70% of Millennials (from 25-40)
10% Gen Z (9-24)
20% Gen X (41-56)
JOBS: Creative, Finance, Student, Linguists, Health Care Provider
EDUCATION:
90% Bachelor degree and higher
10% High School
Data Analysis
Who wants to travel?
88% want to travel
11% Don’t want
1% unsure
Suggestions
88.3% want to see time suggestions
11.7% Want to enter the date manually
99% Want to have guidance while traveling
History knowledge level
56% don’t know the history
26% know some history
18% know history as a pro
02
Synthesis
Key Findings
Users want to see the actual events and answer many historical questions (like who killed Kennedy, is Jesus real, etc.). They also want to experience past happy moments one more time, see people who passed away, see the future, and be able to buy crypto.
Most users are afraid of the butterfly effect, scared of not coming back, and afraid to face a different reality.
They want the time travel to be safe and entertaining.
The Four Ws
Who is experiencing the problem?
The novice users (primarily Millennials) don't know the history and are afraid of traveling due to lack of guidance.
What is the problem?
People don’t know the specific time they want to visit; people are afraid they won’t come back/or cause the butterfly effect
Where does the problem present itself?
They face the problem when they are choosing the time; they are scared before they go to travel. They are not satisfied after they are back.
Why does it matter
More people will be able to use the app and recommend it to friends
Problem Statement
Our novice travelers have the problem that they are afraid not to come back to the present time after their travel and find the whole experience boring due to a lack of historical knowledge.
Our solution should provide clear guidance for everyone on safety features and specific time information they are about to visit.
In this case, they can feel comfortable, calm, and entertained.
Ideation phase
STEP 1
I had two hours Ideation session where I documented all the possible ideas I have for this project.
STEP 2
I split up all ideas into two buckets to help myself with prioritizing.
STEP 3
Using the “Impact/Effort” chart, I tried to use my best judgment to put the idea in the right place.
After I used stickers to match the idea with Problem principles.
STEP 4
Finally, I identified the best match between Impact and Effort and summarized the ideas I want to focus on right now.
Ideation phase. Final
Create an “Interest Survey” during onboarding, so the user can get the suggested time to travel.
If skipped, have sections with times (identify the sections) and a list of all events with a description.
Have a special option to create a personal Memory log, where users can add it’s own time to visit (for personal connections)
Create an option to have a Historical guide during the trip
Make sure that there is clear guidance when it is necessary (+tech support button on every step)
03
Creation
User Flow
Emmet is a Hypothetical Time Machine Console in the Future. It will be set up in the assigned physical place where the time machine is located. In the future, people will be able to travel in time, but not in Space.
They won’t have phones as we know them, and they won’t have an email to Sign up.
Instead, everyone will have a personal code that they can Scan. The information will automatically sync with the code. User Flow
Wireflows
Introducing Support Bot “Emmet”.
The Bot will follow you through each step in order you need a support. Wireflows link
Library
STEP 1
To create the Design Library, I first wanted to explore the Look and Feel of the main Dashboard.
STEP 2
Finalizing the Library. The main elements are color, buttons, extra elements, and Dashboard Layout. Library link
